Some thoughts on the Texas EDM Scene

so after having lived in denver, i realized that there is really no scene here.
thats all i have to say about that.

austin is a step in the right direction.
no offense to anyone doing their best to revive what is left.. mad props to you!! and good luck :]

My thoughts over the years about this subject have changed tremendously... I'm at a point now where I couldn't care less if people support or not, I'll still be doing what I do because I love to do it. It's alwasy "the scene" this and "the scene" that... blah blah blah. I have fun whether there are 5 people or there are 1000 people... Like every other scene, it comes and goes. Nothing last forever, but then again nothing goes away forever either. Either way I'm in for the long haul as long as good music is being produced... There was a time period where the scene needed to go into hibernation though for the sake of the music... things got way to commercialized. I'm actually happy to see it back in its infancy.

the 'scene' is just not the same. its 1000% better there.. which is ok.. and quite honestly with the past 4 years of beatport, to be expected.

1. the promoters would work together when major headliners came in to provide various after hours events. ex. Beatport would throw a party at a club with the headliner at 10-2am, then mEss/crowdpleaser would have an after hours for the event from 2-whenever with free booze. and it was all coordinated for our benefit!!! people were there simply to party!
2. the clubs were the way to go. but there are so many warehouses available all throughout five points that any genre had a home anywhere.
3. the two main promoters were your so called "rave" promoters (dnb, glitch, trance, breakbeat, whatve) and then the big names (craig richards, MANDY, booka, umek, habersham) etc. and so there was plenty of variety at all times.
4. the city embraced EDM (Denver Post would frequently run articles on EDM happenings) ex. http://www.denverpost.com/katvalentine/ci_5971475

5. drugs are more readily available and more accepted than in texas (not saying that is a better thing, but it clearly goes hand in hand with EDM)
6. many of the events were purely donations so anyone could afford to go to some type of show.

its just different. its everywhere. i couldnt even tell you if there were any rock or hip hop clubs around town b/c EDM was the way to go. you had the option of choosing which EDM club you wanted to go to based on drink prices on any given night of the week. its a breeding ground for some serious shit.

every month in the mountains there would be at least 2 HUGE parties about 2 hours outside of denver where they would bring generators, people would camp, and they would have tables set up and dj's tearing IT UP!! and we had agreements with the park rangers b/c we had been doing it so long. basically they would come to check on us sometimes and just say hello and make sure all is well. we were on public land and they permitted it!!

anyways.. just a few notes. there was never a concern over venues, as there was a plethora of empty warehouses with people dying to make a buck, the alcohol laws are different and more conducive to after hourse nightlife (i.e. you can serve free booze all night and there is no such thing as TABC to shut you down or ticket you). and everyone is on ketamine.

There is a solid but viable underground scene here. I just don't think you've seen it. At least I haven't seen you around it. I think I prefer it too. Get rid of all the stupid ravars, crackheads, and thieves while keeping a core of loyal EDM fans.

TABC did come down on our shit and forced the scene way underground. But like I said I prefer to be able to hit up a few nights a week with great DJs and a consistent albeit small crowds of friendly and familiar faces who have known each other for years.

I wish we could get more support but really I just want somewhere we can hang out drink a few beers and play our music in peace. Or violence if it comes to that.

Sure I guess the scene is weak, but that still doesn't stop me from throwing 2 day birthday parties at my house with the whole upstairs/downstairs filled. And that's all I really need.
