Producers.. How do you keep your samples organized? –

I'm getting to a point where I have thousands of samples, and its just an unorganized mess.. How do you organized your samples and make it so you find the sample or exact sound you are going for when you need to find it? I'm getting tired of listening to everything from top to bottom till I find what I am looking for.

Man i hear you on that 1! try making folders like hark kicks/soft kicks/open hats/closed hatz! ect. That helps me and luke go thru all the samples we got! tedious it is but its necesary

Do you sometimes feel like you have waaay to much and you might skip over a gem? how to you minimize that?

I suggest buying/downloading mostly sample packs
that way they are already organized, and judging by the sample pack you know what genre they will be good for
as for your loose samples, just sort them in the same way the sample packs are

mine are categorized by instrument, genre, and culture.
i also DELETE all that I think I'm very unlikely to ever use.

my filing system is based on ''A list'' and ''B list'' folders, refferring to shit i'm likely to use, and shit i'm probably not gonna, respectively. in each of these is a folder for loops and a folder for one shots. from there i break it down into categories such as drums, basses, keys, synths, guitars, horns, vocals, etc. In addition to my a and b folders i have one named ''crate'', which is everything i might use in a live setting. there's a folder for audio loops, categorized accordingly, a folder full of midi clips that i've recorded and want to keep handy, a folder with all of my favorite instrument presets (using the ableton instrument rack to group instruments allows you to save presets and device chains, not only with ableton instruments and effects, but vsts as well making it easy to just drop 'em into a project on the fly), and then of course a folder for dj tracks. the crate is constantly changing. it's kinda like the best of the best folder. the a list folder is full of good samples, but mainly stuff for the studio, rather than live. the b list is the last stop on the way to the recycle bin. once it gets up to four and a half gigs i generally back everything up to dvd and then delete it. and there you have it. i only wish i was as organized and forward-thinking with regards to the rest of my life as i am with my music.

i rule my sample empire with an iron fist. narcotics to keep them docile and public executions if all else fails...
naw i have problems with that shit too. templates in your programs with preloaded banks and customized presets are invaluable for saving time. and if you're at all like me, you have 1000 + drum kicks but only really like 4 or 5. so keep your library large, but your immediate locale slim with only the samples you're really digging atm.
but yeah, a clean world begins with a clean sample library.

kinda along these lines...i've found that hard drive crashes help keep your libraries lean and mean. the first time this happened to me, obviously i went fetal for a week. i gnawed on the carpet for sustinence. i still got a scar on my head and a hole in my studio. but by the 3rd time i wiped out a chunk of my library, i dare say it felt liberating. like i was free.

lol. yeah i feel ya on that. after that first one, all my necessary libraries got backed up on dedicated drives and on cd/dvd. but over time i tend to amass so many bullshit wavs and projects that once and a while a forced purge just feels good. i know its kinda sick. but dont get me wrong, the tracks i really care about, i can retrieve. and i self contain. so recovery now is mostly about reloading.

Something else that I don't think anyone has mentioned with the hard drive crashes and such.
BE SURE TO GET QUALITY HARDDRIVES FOR YOUR PERFORMANCE SYSTEM!
Not saying they need to be huge or anything, just made by like Western Digital or something...
