I'm trying squash for the first time this year.

I've read that hand pollination is recommeded, especially if you don't get a lot of bees in your area.

I do get bees but still going to try the hand pollination method to make sure I maximize my yield.

...we'll see how in goes. it might be the first and last time I grow them.

got some heirloom tomatoes seeds to germinate from some seeds I saved.

(was really a test to make sure I could do it correctly,
b/c you have to ferment the seeds first.)

might start some more of those, but besides that I'm probably *(done) planting for awhile.

    @ the hoser:

    Sabila / Aloe vera plants?

I can't remember a time in my life when I did not have some growing or my family had some growing.

    personally, I like the way they look;
they are easy to care for, and a good thing to keep around (for burns and other things).

they are susceptible to die from freezes,

so I've never grown aloe in anything but containers that were atleast small enough to be carried.

If it freezes/or near freezing, I just either put them right next to a house or put them in a garage until the temperature is above freezing.

I've got some extra sweet basil and cherry tomato seedlings if anybody is interested. Both organically sprouted and grown.

Seedlings are about 2 weeks old and ready to be transplanted into pots or a garden

I got a digital camera (my first) for Festivus.
    Haven't really used it yet.
But I will be needed to use it very shortly.

    (in another pic-related story)
I did live w/ my brother, and he took a pic of a hawk on top of his purple martin bird house.
I'll see if I can get that pic (and will post in appropriate thread).
I saw it when it happened but never saw the pic.

    the type of birdhouse:

    on top of a 12 - 15ft metal pole.

imagine that w/ a large hawk straddling the chimney part.
